POEMS is Portugals Chips Competence Centre, advancing semiconductor innovation through chip design, advanced packaging, and emerging technologies. Bringing together 16 leading partners, it strengthens national capacity and positions Portugal at the forefront of microelectronics.
POEMS, a cutting-edge initiative under the Chips for Europe Initiative, directly addresses the critical needs outlined in Axis 1 of the National Semiconductor Strategy, targeting capacity building and key technological advancements. This strategic alignment aims to catapult Portugal to the forefront of semiconductor innovation and production, specifically focusing on microelectronics and semiconductors, pivotal for elevating the existing industrial and technological capacities to meet the key global challenges. Focusing on the strategic areas of chip design, advanced packaging, and emerging semiconductor technologies, POEMS leverages the diverse expertise of its 16 consortium partners, including leading research and academic institutions, that bring specialised training resources and cutting-edge capabilities.
POEMS provides insights into the national semiconductor landscape and strengthens the ecosystem by connecting national stakeholders with European networks and initiatives, including the Pilot Lines, the EU Chips Design Platform, and the Chips Fund.
POEMS is a central hub for SMEs, startups, and industry to connect with key players and build capabilities. It empowers Portugal to become a prominent player in the semiconductor landscape, driving innovation and growth.
POEMS promotes advanced packaging skills and solutions: versatile packaging techniques, dicing and laser cutting, ultrasonic and photonic connections, and characterisation methods.
POEMS integrates the capacity for designing and simulating stages of chip production: structures, devices, components, and modules. POEMS promotes skills training in specialised software and methodologies.
POEMS drives R&D in emerging technologies such as integrated photonic circuits, microfluidics and flexible electronics, fostering innovation through collaborative projects that bridge gaps between academia and industry.
