The Netherlands is known worldwide for one semiconductor success story: the lithography that enables the most advanced chips. But that is one story out of many. Behind it sits a complete ecosystem of 58,000 people and EUR 33.6 billion in value, spread across the country and the entire value chain.
The strength lies in the spread. Twente turns photonics and quantum into products (LioniX International, QuiX Quantum, PHIX). Delft builds the quantum stack (Qblox, QuantWare, QuTech). Arnhem-Nijmegen is strong in chip design and power electronics (NXP, Nexperia, Ampleon). And a next generation worth more than EUR 4 billion is scaling fast: Nearfield Instruments in metrology, SMART Photonics in integrated photonics, Axelera AI in edge AI.
With a third of Europe's semiconductor industry, the Netherlands plays a key role within the European network of Chips Competence Centres and the EU Chips Act. It is also home to the world's only supplier of leading-edge lithography.
As part of the European network of Chips Competence Centres, ChipNL CC connects the players in this ecosystem and makes its coherence visible to SMEs, start-ups, knowledge institutions and policymakers. The factsheet offers a factual, shared overview the whole network can use.
